Millers claim victory in Suffolk

Town fell to their first home defeat since early September as Rotherham came away from Portman Road with three points.

Goals either side of half-time from Ben Wiles and Shane Ferguson saw the Millers claim a victory which saw them move to the top of League One.

Paul Cook made two changes from Saturday's trip to Sunderland, Conor Chaplin and Scott Fraser replacing Sone Aluko and Kyle Edwards.

The in-form visitors started strongly and forced Christian Walton into an impressive early save, Town's 'keeper acrobatically turning a deflected Jamie Lindsay shot around the post.

Good pressing from Janoi Donacien led to the Blues finding an opening of their own. After Fraser had intercepted a pass in the middle of the park, the ball transferred through Chaplin, Macauley Bonne and Donacien before the Scottish midfielder volleyed wide from the edge of the area.

Rotherham took the lead midway through the half, Wiles running at the defence before unleashing a powerful left-footed strike from the edge of the area which found the top right corner of Walton's goal.

Town had Lee Evans to thank for keeping the deficit at just one goal three minutes later, the Welshman throwing his body in the way of Michael Smith's effort after the ball had been pulled back to the Millers striker.

Cook's side continued to live dangerously, Richard Wood's header across goal following an out-swinging Ferguson free-kick falling just wide of the mark.

The first chance of the second period went the way of Town, Evans firing a free-kick just over the top from 25 yards after Fraser had been brought down.

Rotherham doubled their lead just before the hour mark. A classy bit of interplay led to Chiedozie Ogbene reaching the byline and pulling the ball back to the middle of the box. Freddie Ladapo's shot was blocked but Ferguson won the race to the loose ball at the back post to fire into the roof of the net from close range.

Smith could have made it 3-0 with 20 minutes remaining but the Millers forward headed onto the roof of the net from six yards following a cross from the left.

Joe Pigott saw a header saved and Morsy fired wide late on as the visitors stood firm to take all three points back to South Yorkshire.
