MARK'S PROGRAMME NOTES | COLCHESTER UNITED

9 November 2021

The thoughts of Town's CEO ahead of tonight's game

Good evening and welcome to tonight’s Papa John’s Trophy game. I’m delighted to welcome the players, staff, directors and supporters from Colchester United to Portman Road. Following on from the visit of Brett Johnson last month, Ed Schwartz will be attending his first Town game this evening so hopefully he can follow Brett in making a winning start to life at Portman Road. Tonight’s match will no doubt be an intriguing encounter given that whoever comes out on top will progress into the next round of the competition.

This game is our second of three home fixtures in three different competitions inside a week. Unfortunately, the first of those against Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon left me, and I’m sure many of you, disappointed. Having gone in front early on through Wes Burns, we all hoped that we would have kicked on to progress into the second round, particularly having named almost the same side who were brilliant in the 4-1 victory at Wycombe last Tuesday. No team will simply lay down, though, particularly in the FA Cup, and Oldham deserve credit for the way that they came back into the game. In the end, a brilliant penalty save from Christian Walton has kept us in the competition and we’ll do it all over again at Boundary Park.

I was delighted, but not surprised, to learn that we had broken our own record for the number of iFollow match passes sold for the game at Wycombe. On top of 1,800 fans at Adams Park, over 4,600 match passes were sold. That is simply incredible. Your support continues to amaze me, both home and away, and it goes without saying that we are giving everything to deliver the success that you deserve.

Thank you, as ever, for your support. I ask you to get behind the boys this evening and let’s progress into the next round.

Enjoy the game,

Mark Ashton.
