Ward and Yengi strikes secure three points at Portman Road
Town U23s returned to winning ways in the Professional Development League Two with victory over Colchester United.
Matt Ward and Tete Yengi netted in the first half to secure the three points at Portman Road.
Town got off to the perfect start as, following a corner, Ward drilled past former Town 'keeper Dean Gerken from close range within the first three minutes.
Tawanda Chirewa fired just over shortly afterwards with Colchester's Chay Cooper calling Antoni Bort into action for the first time at the other end, parrying away a free-kick from 25 yards.
Elkan Baggott was forced off through injury with just over half an hour played, the centre-back falling awkwardly on his shoulder following an aerial challenge.
The Blues responded well to that blow, though, as they doubled their lead three minutes later, Yengi collecting a pass inside the box before curling a left-footed effort into the bottom corner.
Colchester could've pulled one back just before the break but, having stolen possession 30 yards out from goal, Frankie Terry - nephew of former England captain John - blazed over.
Gerken ensured the scoreline remained at 2-0 by getting a strong hand to Myles Kenlock's near-post strike from a tight angle in the first period's final action of note.
The U's were inches away from halving Town's lead early in the second half as Cooper's free-kick cannonned off of the top of the crossbar.
Ben Morris, one of two second-half subs alongside the returning Tom Hughes, was denied a goal with his first touch as his powerful strike was blocked by Billy Cracknell inside the box.
Albie Armin was the next to come close, heading narrowly wide from an in-swinging Cameron Humphreys corner with 10 minutes remaining.
Kenlock was sent off after picking up a second yellow card for an off-the-ball incident involving Samson Tovide shortly afterwards, the Colchester man also receiving a booking.
Yengi came close to his second and Town's third in the dying moments but, after playing a one-two with Morris, he smashed his effort from inside the box against the crossbar.
