Defeat in Devon

Plymouth came from behind to condemn Town to a narrow loss.

George Edmundson headed the Blues in front early on but goals either side of half-time from Luke Jephcott and Conor Grant saw the hosts claim all three points.

Paul Cook made two changes to the side who had defeated Fleetwood last Saturday, Luke Woolfenden and Hayden Coulson returning in place of Janoi Donacien and Sone Aluko. Donacien and Wes Burns both missed the fixture due to illness.

Both sets of supporters paid tribute to the late Paul Mariner prior to kick-off with a minute's applause and displays at a sold out Home Park, celebrating the life of a legend at both Plymouth and Town.

The Blues could've taken the lead inside two minutes. Lee Evans played Coulson, who was operating in a more advanced role on the right flank, in behind the defence with a lofted ball. Coulson opted to pass the ball across to Macauley Bonne, who had his shot cleared off of the line.

Plymouth created a golden chance of their own just a minute later in what was a frantic start to proceedings, Christian Walton denying Ryan Hardie when the Argyle number nine was in one-on-one.

Town took the lead on 14 minutes. Evans' corner dropped at the feet of Bonne, who teed up Sam Morsy. Blues' skipper dinked a pinpoint cross to the back post for Edmundson to head into the net.

The goal did little to reduce the high intensity both on the pitch and in the stands at Home Park.

Plymouth equalised shortly before half-time. Walton pulled off an impressive reaction save after Panutche Camara had met a cross at the back post with a volley but Jephcott was in the right place to touch the rebound into an empty net from a yard out.

Town pushed to retake the lead in stoppage time but Argyle 'keeper Michael Cooper was well-positioned to collect Kyle Edwards' low shot after the winger had cut inside his marker.

The hosts began the second half just as they had finished the first as they took the lead for the first time, Grant drilling a left-footed shot into the bottom corner from inside the box.

Edwards, who had switched to the right wing after Bersant Celina replaced Coulson, cut onto his left foot before seeing a low effort blocked by Brendan Galloway as Town pushed for an equaliser. Plymouth countered and went within inches of their third of the afternoon moments later, Hardie's effort from a narrow angle drifting wide via the boot of Walton.

The next chance went the way of Edwards again but, after Conor Chaplin had pulled the ball back across the box, he couldn't get the ball out from underneath his feet and shot wide.

Bonne saw a close-range effort following a low ball in from Woolfenden saved before substitute Rekeem Harper was also denied by Cooper, Plymouth's Galloway appearing to handle the ball after the second chance before the centre-back cleared the danger and Town's penalty appeals were waved away.

Plymouth saw out five minutes of stoppage time to claim the spoils.
