Humphreys goal not enough as visitors claim spoils

Town U23s fell to a narrow home defeat against Professional Development League Two Southern division leaders Cardiff this afternoon.

Cameron Humphreys was on target for the young Blues as the visitors netted with 20 minutes remaining to seal the three points.

Town got off to a strong start as an impressive double save from Rohan Luthra denied Louie Barry's curling effort and Harley Curtis' headed rebound, Ben Morris curling wide moments later.

Cardiff moved in front against the run of play as Taylor Jones smashed a low cross into the roof of the net at the back post.

The Bluebirds nearly doubled their lead shortly after half-time but their trialist's free-kick cannoned off of the crossbar.

Instead, Humphreys' free-kick at the other end levelled the match with just over an hour played, the midfielder's effort going all the way through a crowded penalty area before nestling in the bottom corner.

The parity was shortlived, however, as Cardiff moved back in front seven minutes later through Chanka Zimba's close-range strike.

Town saw a penalty claim after a challenge on Barry waved away with 10 minutes to play while Cardiff somehow survived a goalmouth scramble in the dying moments as the young Blues fell to defeat at Playford Road.

Town: Bort, Alexander, Clements, Healy (Bradshaw 77'), Woolfenden, Baggott (C), Curtis, Humphreys, Yengi (Boatswain 64'), Barry, Morris.
