Young Blues beaten in close contest

Town U23s fell to a 1-0 defeat against Hull City at Portman Road this afternoon.

The young Blues, who had won their last eight Professional Development League Two outings before the visit of the Tigers, went down to Tremaine Eastmond's first-half strike.

The hosts started the brighter of the two sides and went close in just the third minute through Harry Barbrook. The wing-back arrived late in the box and met a cross at the back post, but his strike was blocked and Hull cleared the danger.

Eleven minutes later the visitors took the lead. Following neat play down the Tigers' left side, Eastmond was in the right place at the right time to fire in from a low cross.

Tyreece Simpson surged forward with 23 minutes on the clock, with his left-footed drive well held by Hull 'keeper Harry Fisk.

Town continued to press and had another half-chance just two minutes later, but Albie Armin volleyed well over from the edge of the area.

Just after the half-hour mark Nick Hayes and Elkan Baggott had to be alert as the Blues duo combined to block and clear after Will Jarvis had been played through for the visitors.

With just one goal in it at the break, Town, much like in the first half, started the second period well and went close in the 48th minute through Baggott. Tommy Hughes played in a lovely cross, but the defender's header was comfortably collected by Fisk.

Chances were few and far between with no further goalmouth action until the final 10 minutes. With just over 80 minutes played, Barbrook made another dangerous run but saw his acrobatic effort at the back post clip the crossbar before Hull eventually cleared.

The hosts pressed late on and looked the more likely to score the second goal of the game, but Hull stood firm and held on for all three points.

Town now sit one point behind leaders Bristol City, who drew 1-1 with Watford this afternoon, in the PDL2 Southern section.

The young Blues are next in action when they face the Robins away from home on 12 April.
