Dominant display from young Blues

Town U18s won the Professional Development League Cup with a 7-0 win over Coventry City.

Four goals came in the first half as Adem Atay's side cruised to victory and lifted the trophy under the Portman Road lights.

An early red card for Coventry gave Town the ascendancy. In just the 13th minute, Gerard Buabo latched on to a long pass before being bundled into by Abel Alabi. The Sky Blues defender was dismissed and Tawanda Chirewa casually converted with a Panenka from 12 yards.

Four minutes later and the young Blues had a second. Jesse Nwabueze was brought down in the box by Evan Aisowieren and another penalty was awarded. Chirewa stepped up again but saw his effort saved. Nico Valentine was quickest to react, though, and he squeezed the loose ball in from a tight angle.

In the 35th minute Jack Manly brought down a wonderful long pass from Cameron Humphreys before tucking the ball into the bottom corner for Town's third.

Valentine had his second and the young Blues' fourth five minutes before the break. Nwabueze beat his man and cut the ball back to Valentine, who casually slotted the ball into the bottom corner with his left foot.

Just two minutes into the second half Buabo met a corner and powered a header beyond Coventry 'keeper Luke Bell for the fifth of the night.

Chirewa scored arguably the goal of the game shortly after the hour mark. After more good work from Nwabueze, Town's no.10 shifted on to his left foot and whipped the ball into the far side netting from the corner of the box.

And in the 67th minute Albie Armin made it seven when he met another lovely corner from Humphreys and did well to get over the ball and head past Bell.

With nine minutes left to play, Steven Turner, who replaced Manly in the second half, fired over having been set up by Valentine on the edge of the box.

Town kept the majority of the ball in the final stages and lifted the trophy in front of 559 supporters at Portman Road.
