U23 | MILLWALL 0 TOWN 2

8 February 2022

Victory on the road for Kieron Dyer's side

Town U23s made it four successive wins at the start of 2022 as goals from Harley Curtis and Tawanda Chirewa secured victory at 10-man Millwall.

It was 13 minutes in before Town earnt themselves a chance on goal. Elkan Baggott met Cameron Humphreys’ looped free-kick to the back post, although Millwall keeper, Joe Wright was equal to the headed effort.

Another free-kick created the next opening four minutes later, but Curtis' drilled effort was straight at Wright, who managed to tip the ball over for a corner.

Millwall’s first real goalscoring opportunity emerged four minutes from half-time, with the young Lions piecing together a move which got them to Bert White’s left-hand post before the Blues 'keeper turned an effort behind for a corner.

The hosts came out strong after half-time and were unlucky not to score immediately, after another free-kick that was played deep found its way to the Town six-yard box and was subsequently drilled hard into White’s right-hand post.

Millwall were reduced to 10 men just a minute later, after Tyrese Briscoe’s sliding challenge on Chirewa earned a straight red card.

With just over an hour played, a change of formation saw Nico Valentine brought on. He made an instant impact as he made his way into the Millwall box from the right wing and opted to pass across the face of goal, as opposed to taking the shot himself. Curtis was waiting to convert the chance at the back post and send his side into the lead.

Millwall earned a number of corners as they looked for a leveller but Kieron Dyer's side repelled the danger.

A last-minute break from Town saw Chirewa secure the three points, after a counter-attack in numbers saw Cameron Humphreys play the ball around the Millwall ‘keeper to where the Blues attacker was ready to finish from close range.
