17 January 2022

Hughes hat-trick sees young Blues secure three points

Town U23s beat QPR 4-2 in the Professional Development League Two this afternoon.

A hat-trick from Tommy Hughes, and a fine strike from Tawanda Chirewa, saw the young Blues take the spoils at Playford Road.

The hosts went behind in just the 12th minute as QPR converted from the penalty spot, but, afrer good work from Harley Curtis, were level 20 minutes later as Hughes fired in with a first-time strike from just inside the area.

Just two minutes later, Hughes had his and Town's second. Matt Ward burst past his man before seeing a low strike saved, with Hughes in the right place at the right time to smash in the rebound.

Four minutes after half-time QPR equalised, but again the young Blues responded well and restored their advantage in the 51st minute. Chirewa picked the ball up and drove at the QPR backline before picking his spot and firing into the bottom corner of the net.

On the hour mark Hughes completed his hat-trick and gave the home side an important cushion. Chirewa was again the provider as he got down the right side of the box before picking out Hughes who had a yard of space in the box.

Second-half substitute Tete Yengi went close to netting a fifth in the dying stages, but his low strike cannoned off the post.

The result means Town U23s have now won their first two fixtures of the calendar year, with the young Blues next in action when they take on Millwall away from home on Tuesday, 8 February [kick-off 1.30pm].
