TOWN 3 SOUTHEND 1

26 July 2022

TJJ, Leigh and Ladapo on target at Portman Road

Town closed out pre-season with a home win over Southend United.

Goals from Tyreece John-Jules, Greg Leigh and Freddie Ladapo were enough to secure victory for the Blues, with Callum Powell on target for the visitors.

Kieran McKenna made 11 changes from Saturday's 1-1 draw at Millwall, with Sone Aluko captaining the side against the Shrimpers.

Town took the lead with just over six minutes played at Portman Road. After Kane Vincent-Young had been scythed down on the right flank, Aluko's in-swinging free-kick was flicked into the back of the net by John-Jules.

John-Jules began the Blues' next attack, releasing Kyle Edwards with a penetrating pass through Southend's defence, with the winger then squaring for Aluko, who saw his shot blocked.

Edwards was the next person to be denied as, after dancing past three defenders, his near-post strike was turned around the post by Shrimpers 'keeper Steve Arnold.

Arnold's impressive showing continued with a fine save with just over half an hour played, getting his fingertips to a well-struck half-volley from John-Jules.

Aluko stung the palms of Southend's goalkeeper from the edge of the area late in the half, with Jack Wood, one of 11 changes for the visitors at half-time, blazing an effort high and wide early in the second period.

Leigh doubled the advantage with 57 minutes on the clock. Edwards raced down the right wing before squaring the ball for the full-back, who side-footed into the back of the net from the middle of the box in front of the Sir Bobby Robson Stand.

Southend pulled one back with just under 15 minutes left to play as Powell took in a ball over the top of the defence before finding the bottom corner from inside the box.

Christian Walton denied Powell of his and the visitors' second just a few minutes later, tipping his curling strike from the edge of the area onto the post.

Town, now playing with an entirely different XI to the one they started the evening with, regained their two-goal buffer late in the 90 as Ladapo headed a Wes Burns cross into the far corner of Southend's goal.
