Defender joins Saints on three-year deal

Town Women defender Paige Peake has joined Barclays Women’s Championship side Southampton on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.

The centre-back, who made over a half-century of appearances for the Tractor Girls, has signed a three-year deal with the Saints.

Paige, 19, progressed through Town's WSL Academy setup and signed her first professional contract with the Club in July last year.

Born in Essex, she began her football career at Ipswich Town COE before moving to Essex RTC. She then returned to the Club in the summer of 2018 and, after an impressive 2018/19 season with the young Tractor Girls, she made her senior debut on the opening day of the 2019/20 campaign.

Paige established herself as a crucial cog at the heart of Town’s defence and scored her first goal for Joe Sheehan’s side with a fine free-kick to open the scoring against Norwich City in September 2019. Paige also converted a penalty later in the match as the Tractor Girls secured a 4-1 victory over their East Anglian Rivals.

She enjoyed a superb first campaign at senior level as she featured in almost every match for Town, while also playing her part as the Tractor Girls made it to the round of 16 in the Women’s FA Cup before being beaten by eventual winners Manchester City.

Paige continued her fine form in 2020/21, starring in a defence that had not conceded before the season was eventually curtailed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last season Paige enjoyed a strong campaign, scoring seven goals in 30 appearances. She would also be vital to a Town defence that kept 22 clean sheets in 34 matches as the Tractor Girls battled for promotion, before eventually finishing third behind Southampton and Oxford United. Paige also played a prominent role in yet another historic Women's FA Cup run, starting in every game for the Blues as they reached the quarter-finals before bowing out to West Ham in front of a record attendance at the Goldstar Ground in Felixstowe.

On the international front she has been a regular for England at youth levels and has won caps with the young Lionesses from U15 all the way through to U19 level.

Paige departs having made 55 appearances for Town Women, scoring 19 goals.

Everyone at the Club wishes Paige well for the future.
