Young Blues beat County Antrim to land first trophy of the season
Town U18s lifted the SuperCupNI with a 4-2 victory over County Antrim on Friday evening.
The young Blues won the Premier section of the tournament in what was a thrilling encounter at Ballymena Showgrounds in Northern Ireland.
Town had beaten San Francisco Glens SC and Club Puebla, as well as others, on the way to the final, while Antrim were comfortable winners against Londonderry in their semi-final.
The final got off to a quick start with both sides wasting chances in the first five minutes. Town continued to threaten, though, and opened the scoring eight minutes in. Nico Valentine, who was a threat all evening, drifted in from the right before calmly striking the ball into the far corner.
Valentine was involved again for Town's second on the night. The tricky winger provided the assist for Ben Haddoch, who found the back of the net with a fierce left-footed drive.
Antrim responded well and within eight minutes of the young Blues' second they had one of their own. An unfortunate error from Harry Barbrook let in Antrim’s Sean Moore, who scored at the near post with Woody Williamson, Town's goalkeeper, left with no chance.
And it was Antrim who kept the pressure going. In the 33rd minute they had their equaliser and again it was Moore the scorer.
Despite conceding two in quick succession, Town were unlucky not to finish the first half in front. Shortly before the break, Ash Boatswain struck the post following a lovely cross from Harry Barbrook.
The sides went in level at half-time of the game played over two periods of 35 minutes.
In the 46th minute Town regained the lead. Boatswain played the ball into Finley Barbrook, who set up Jack Manly to finish.
Approaching the hour mark, a miscommunication between Antrim's defender and goalkeeper saw Gerard Buabo with an open goal, and he made no mistake to seal victory for the young Blues.
Town's win in the final of the SuperCupNI Premier Section brings home their first silverware of the season and the Club’s first ever SuperCupNI trophy.
