Tommy Hughes on target for young Blues
A second-half strike from Tommy Hughes saw Town U23s secure their eighth win on the bounce with victory at Sheffield Wednesday this afternoon.
Hughes found the bottom corner 12 minutes from time at Middlewood Road, with three points taking the young Blues to the top of the Professional Development League Two South table.
Town now sit three points ahead of Bristol City having played one game more than the Robins.
Wednesday fielded a strong starting XI in South Yorkshire, with first-teamers Joe Wildsmith, Jaden Brown, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Florian Kamberi and Sylla Sow all featuring.
The hosts started the stronger of the two sides and it was Dele-Bashiru who almost fired them ahead, but his curling strike from just outside the box sailed narrowly wide.
Blues shot-stopper Bert White was then called into action as he comfortably collected Jay Glover's effort with 10 minutes on the clock.
The hosts had another opportunity shortly after, but Will Trueman poked wide having met Kamberi's ball into the area.
Town threatened at the other end as Zak Bradshaw got up well to meet a corner, Wednesday's David Agbontohoma jumping just as well to nod the Town defender's header clear from just under the bar.
White was ready again when he denied Kwame Boateng, who had impressively brought down a long pass, at his near post with a strong stop.
And the Town 'keeper was again tested as he dealt with Brown's strike shortly before half-time.
Early in the second half the young Blues thought they had the lead, but Harley Curtis was adjudged to have directed the ball in with his arm, and the goal was chalked off.
Town, who had grown into the game, continued to press and went close when Cameron Humphreys tried to bend one into the top corner, but his shot sailed a yard or so over Wildsmith's crossbar.
Wildsmith produced a fantastic stop about 15 minutes from the end when he clawed away Fraser Alexander's drive from the edge of the area, but Town's pressure was then rewarded in the 78th minute as Hughes converted.
Town produced a neat move with the ball eventually finding its way to Hughes just inside the box, and he made no mistake with a clinical right-footed strike that saw the ball nestle into the bottom corner.
The young Blues, who now have 42 points from 20 games in PDL2 this season, are next in action when they face Hull City at Playford Road on 5 April.
