Defeat for young Blues
Town U23s bowed out at the Professional Development League semi-final stage following a 5-4 defeat after extra-time against Coventry City this afternoon.
Level at 2-2 after 90 minutes, the young Blues scored twice in extra-time at the CBS Arena with goals from Tommy Hughes and Tawanda Chirewa, but were beaten as the hosts bagged three within the extra half an hour.
Having gone behind in the early stages, goals from Hughes and Cameron Humphreys put the visitors ahead at half-time, with Hughes again on target in extra-time after a second-half strike from the Sky Blues had made it all square at the end of regular time.
The home side equalised from the penalty spot in extra-time, but Chirewa's effort in the 105th minute made it 4-3 to Town.
Coventry started quickly and took the lead after just seven minutes through Will Bapaga, but John McGreal's Town responded well and were level after a quarter of an hour thanks to Hughes.
With almost half an hour played, Humphreys' strike then put the young Blues in front in the West Midlands.
It remained that way until half-time but 10 minutes into the second half the hosts were level as Marco Rus converted.
Town hit the woodwork in the dying stages as Gerard Buabo headed against the bar following a corner.
Just a minute into extra-time Hughes restored the advantage, but it was level again in the 99th minute as Jonny Ngandu fired in from the penalty spot.
Seconds before half-time of extra-time, though, Chirewa put the young Blues ahead again.
In the 113th minute Coventry were level once more. Albie Armin was adjudged to have fouled in the penalty area, and again Ngandu converted from 12 yards, with the centre-back also being sent off.
And a minute later they had the lead. Ryan Howley headed in to send the hosts through.
Coventry will face Bristol City in the PDL final.
