Frontman to become first summer addition

Freddie Ladapo will become Town’s first summer signing when he joins the Club following the expiration of his contract with Rotherham United.

The 29-year-old forward, who made 41 appearances for the Millers across all competitions in 2021/22, has penned a three-year deal at Portman Road.

Freddie, who represented Southend United and Colchester United at youth level before turning pro with The U’s in 2011, had loan spells with Thurrock, Chelmsford City, Bishop’s Stortford, Woking and Nuneaton Town while on the books with the Essex side.

A move to Kidderminster Harriers followed for the Romford-born frontman, before loan stints with Hayes & Yeading United and Grays Athletic.

Freddie then signed for Margate in 2015 and, having scored more than 25 goals in his one season with The Gate, he joined Crystal Palace in the summer of 2016.

He had further loan spells with Oldham Athletic and Shrewsbury Town while at Selhurst Park and made his debut for the Eagles in September 2017, as a second-half substitute for Roy Hodgson’s side away to Manchester United.

A return to Southend was next in store, before he then moved to Plymouth Argyle in 2018, and was top scorer for The Pilgrims in the 2018/19 campaign.

Having impressed at Home Park, Freddie made the Yorkshire switch with Rotherham and scored 29 minutes into his debut as Paul Warne’s side beat AFC Wimbledon 2-1 in August 2019.

Freddie enjoyed success last season as The Millers lifted the Papa John’s Trophy and achieved automatic promotion from League One.

He will make the move to Portman Road when his current deal at AESSEAL New York Stadium comes to an end in June.

“I’ve had a long day doing paperwork, the medical and meeting people, but I am so pleased to have signed here,” Freddie told iFollow Ipswich.

“Everyone has been so good to me already and shown me around the training ground and stadium.

“The chance to come and play for this club, with the history and fanbase it has, is brilliant for me. I am buzzing.

“The manager has plans and goals here, and this feels like the perfect fit for me.”

“We are really happy to have secured Freddie’s services,” Kieran McKenna added.

“He is a proven goalscorer at this level but beyond that he brings qualities to the side that we think will be important for us.

“Freddie has a good physical stature, the ability to run beyond the defence, and is good in one-on-one situations.

“He’s a signing that we think can be really important for us.”
