Wes Burns’ memorable strike against Coventry City is the 2023/24 Goal of the Season, sponsored by Hawk-Eye.
With the winner announced at Sunday’s annual EFL Awards ceremony, his effort beat out competition from the Championship, League One and League Two.
The 29-year-old collected the ball on the right flank in the 41st minute before cutting inside towards the corner of the box and curling an unstoppable shot into the top corner of Brad Collins’ goal with the outside of his right foot.
That eye-catching finish came at the end of a superb team move which saw Town work the ball from their own box and eventually to Leif Davis, with the left-back then switching the play to the Blues’ number seven.
Kieran McKenna’s side won 2-1 on that day back in early December, with Coventry pulling a goal back right at the death after George Hirst had opened the scoring with just over six minutes played at Portman Road.
Wes’ stunning strike previously won both the Club’s Goal of the Month and Sky Bet Championship Goal of the Month awards for December.
Speaking about the finish against Coventry after the game, the winger said: “The space opened up on the inside, so I cut in and thought I’d use the outside of my foot.
“I’ve tried it so many times in training and they fly over, or you don’t hit them right and they bobble towards the 'keeper, but I caught it sweet this time and I’m glad it was on a matchday, after a great move from the team."
