Stuart began his playing career at St Mirren, with Town manager Paul Lambert also there at the time, and he made more than 80 appearances for Saints.

He had four years at Airdrie, with further spells at a number of clubs north of the border before taking on a player-assistant manager role at Hamilton and helped the club into the Scottish Premiership.

A coaching role in Qatar followed, then he took over as manager at Limerick. He first worked with Paul Lambert as U23 coach at Aston Villa, then became his assistant manager at Wolves and Stoke - a position he now holds at Portman Road.
